Alfred spent the first 20 years or so in New York. From there he journeyed to Ohio where he remained for some time. It was here that he met Miss Fidelia R. Gallea, who was destined to become his life long partner. After marriage, he with his wife came to Michigan and located on the land that has always been his home, one of the finest farms in the vicinity.

In 1864, Alfred enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Cavalry, but only saw seven months of actual service.
