Willey Henry Almy was born in Rochester at the homestead of Nehemiah Osburn, his maternal grandfather, who resided there for over a half century. Nehemiah's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Osburn, became the wife of Phillip Greene Almy and the mother of Willey Henry Almy. Willey acquired his education in the public schools, after which he was employed as bookkeeper in the office of a shoe manufacturer for seven years. He then became secretary and treasurer of the Rochester Hosiery Company, in which he was financially interested until 1893, at which time he assumed the management of the Osburn and Filon estates, being known in business circles of the city as managing real-estate agent.

Willey's son Philip died on his 87th birthday. He was injured in a fall when a strange dog startled him as he was walking down the back steps of his home. He suffered a fractured shoulder and hip, hospitalizing him until his death. Philip attended schools in Rochester and graduated from Rochester Business Institute in 1910. A veteran of World War I, Philip was stationed in Virginia and served with the Coast Artillery.

Willey's four sons operated the Almy Brothers service station in Rochester from about 1911 until 1948
