Vernon served 2 years in the U.S. Army, 1953-1955. In civilian life, he worked in the logging industry as a powersaw operator.
Back home in Washington State after his military service, Vernon worked in the woods with his father-in-law Jesse Harris, and then later for the Weyerhaeuser Company until his retirement in 1980. His love of the woods and the outdoors was mirrored in his favorite pastimes of camping, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He alwo loved birds and small animals and always made sure that there was enough birdseed in the bird feeder, syrup for the "hummers" and a carrot for the rabbit that came into his yard.
