Clarence Mortimer Almy started a tailoring business in 1892 in New York City, later specializing in clerical vestments. When son James later joined the business, it became known as C. M. Almy & Son. Later James brought his wife's sister's husband, Mr. Fendler, into the business. Due to health problems, the Almys moved down South and Mr. Fendler took over the business.
