Stafford "Spike" Almy lived in Barrington, Rhode Island, for 20 years before moving to Vermont. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Boston University. He was a psychiatric social worker at the Vermont State Hospital for 13 years before his death. He also conducted a private practice in family therapy in St. Albans. He was a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the National Association of Social Workers.
Stafford died November 13, 1990, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Fairfax, Vermont. His wife, Linda Hagstrand, was a member of the Vermont legislature. Subsequent to Stafford's death, Linda married Timothy H. Smith.
