The history of Westport, Massachusetts, which is located about 10 miles to the East of Tiverton, Rhode Island, states that at Westport's first town meeting, held 20 August 1789, the first Board of Selectmen was elected and included William Almy, Edward Borden, and Richard Kirby. A year later, William Almy served as Westport's representative to the state convention deliberating over the proposed United States Constitution which William supported.
