Both Horace and Abbie grew up in Little Compton and both taught school there prior to their marriage. Abbie also taught in the Fall River, Massachusetts school. During the Civil War Horace worked as a carpenter for the U.S. Government, near Washington, D.C. He had helped build, and keep in repair, stables and other shelter for the U.S. Cavalrymen's horses.
