Loren graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1925, and earned a degree in physics from the University of Nebraska in 1929. He earned a master's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1940. Loren, in the latter part of his career, was a Professor of Civil Engineering at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.

Loren enjoyed traveling and bridge and was a member of numerous engineering and engineering eduaction organizations.

In the early 1960's, the Almys spent two years in Poona, India, where, on a U.S. Government-funded cooperative venture, he taught engineering teachers. He sponsored several Indian students who came to the U.S. for graduate work, some of whom remained here and became citizens.
