Merwin Almy graduated from Ohio State University in 1943 with a B.Sc. degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity and Beta Alpha Psi, an accounting honorary society. During World War II he served as an officer in the Army Quartermaster Corps. He served again during the Korean Emergency with the Air Force Auditor General. He had approximately 30 years in the Reserve and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In 1947, he accepted a job with the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), an arm of the Congress, in Washington, DC, as an accountant/auditor. He retired in 1978, having attained the position of an Assistant Director. In his over 30 year auditing career he supervised many audits of Government corporations and the procurement and supply operations of the Department of Defense. He was twice assigned to the staff of the Committee on Appropriations, U.S. House of Representatives, and in 1971 served on the staff of the Commission on the Organization of the Government of the District of Columbia.

Merwin descends from 11 of the passengers on the ship Mayflower that came to America in 1620. He has Mayflower descent from: John Alden, wife Priscilla Mullens, and her parents William and Alice Mullens; Francis Cooke; Samuel Fuller; John Howland, wife Elizabeth Tilley, and her parents John and Elizabeth Tilley; and Richard Warren. He was a member of the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Oregon Mayflower Societies, having served as Governor of the Virginia Society and Treasurer and Governor of the Oregon Society. He was also Treasurer General for six years of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. He was Treasurer of the Pilgrim John Howland Society for many years. He was also a member of the Huguenot Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Roger Williams Family Association, the Alden Kindred, and the Warren Cousins.

One of Merwin's hobbies was genealogy and he gathered the information for this genealogical publication.
