George J. Almy, known as "Budd", obtained his early education in Palo Alto and Santa Clara, California, and attended Stanford University for two years. His family moved to New York in 1937 and Budd completed his college education at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the DKE fraternity while there. After college, in the summer of 1939, Budd began working for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, a career extending to his retirement in 1978. His business career was interrupted by World War II in which he served as an officer with honor and distinction. Budd was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for distinguishing himself by heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in Germany on or about 27 Febraury 1945. He was also awarded a Certificate of Merit and a Purple Heart.
