Almy Hall

Behrend College, Penn State University

In surfing the internet, I came across an article that said the Board of Trustees at Penn State University had approved the name Almy Hall for a five-story, lodge-style residence hall/study facility at their Behrend College in Erie, Pennsylvania.

From further research I learned that Almy Hall was named in honor of Sailing Master Thomas C. Almy (1232-412), Commander of the Schooner Sommers during the War of 1812. That action was in keeping with the theme of naming residence halls at the campus for persons and ships that took part in the Battle of Lake Erie.

This Thomas C. Almy was born in 1787, the son of John Coggeshall Almy and his first wife, Catherine Tucker. He died aboard ship in December 1813 of pneumonia.
