Dr. Thomas P. Almy (1233-4657-11)

A number of Almy Family members sent me the following information concerning the honor recently bestowed on Dr. Thomas P. Almy. I have previously written about Dr. Almy and his medical career in Newsletter No. 18 (April 1979), page 5; No. 37 (January 1984), page 3; No. 71 (July 1992), page 1; and No. 72 (October 1992), page 1. The following news is from publications of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

"Future medical students will find an enhanced clinical component in their DMS education, thanks to anonymous donors who this year created an exceptional new fund. The Thomas P. Almy Clinical Scholars Fund is the largest of three funds devoted to sustaining the learning relationship that exists between faculty physicians and their students. A gift of $1 million created the Almy Clinical Scholars Fund, in honor of Thomas Almy, M.D., an emeritus member of the DMS faculty and a mentor to many physicians who have studied and trained at DHMC.

"The income from the Almy Clinical Scholars Fund will go toward supporting faculty salaries within the Department of Medicine -- the largest clinical department at DHMC. A small portion of the income will be used to underwrite ten percent of a junior faculty member's time for bedside teaching. The rest will allow a senior faculty member to put extra time and effort into teaching, as well as into developing teaching programs, over a three-year period."
