Note from General William A. Knowlton (1252-9773-34)

General Knowlton wrote "My German grandfather, whose daughter married the son of Sylvia Bassett Almy, was a soldier in the 4th Artillery for most of his life. He spent large parts of it as the 1st Sergeant of the Battery. While stationed at the Presidio by San Francisco, he was sent against the Modoc Indians in an area not far from where you live. In the Lava Beds he was cited for bravery in what was later called the Thomas Massacre. Someday I shall visit the battle area."
