Howard was educated at Mowry & Goff Academy in Providence and Brown University, Class of 1886. After graduation, Howard O. Almy entered the wholesale florist business. His greenhouses were located in Thornton, RI. His father had built six large greenhouses (which at the time cost $100,000) for Howard to operate as a florist. Howard was a poor businessman and spent most of his time (his brother Benjamin said) playing the violin. The business finally failed and Howard bought,in 1922, the Meadow View Farm in Woodstock, VT, where he raised registered Jersey cattle, and thereafter divided his time between Vermont and New Smyrna, FL, until he settled permanently at Daytona Beach, FL.
