Walking Stick Update

Newsletter No. 116 (October 2003) told of the e-mail received from England asking for help in identifying a Captain H. Almy.

Included was a picture of a carved mahogany walking stick that had been made for Captain H. Almy. I wrote back that I thought the walking stick belonged to Captain Holder Almy (Almy descendant No. 1239-2165), who was born in Tiverton, RI, 4 May 1830 and died 25 Sept 1887 in Norfolk, Virginia.

I found out that the person who wrote me was an antique dealer in England who picked up the stick at a trade fair where it had come from a clearance.

I contacted William D. Almy, a descendant of Captain Holder who my wife and I had visited over 20 years ago. I told him about the e-mail I had received. He said he was very interested in the walking stick, so I sent him copies of the exchange of e-mails with the antique dealer in England and wished him luck.

In Newsletter No. 118 (April 2004) I wrote that William D. Almy had acquired the walking stick from the antique dealer in England. I had hoped that more information would be available for the newsletter at that time.

Bill subsequently informed me that he didn't get back to me sooner because he was preoccupied with a number of things, not the least of which was that he underwent quintuple by-pass surgery. All has gone exceptionally well and he is now ship shape since completing 36 rehab sessions.
